New Sculpture by Mark Totan, Plus paintings by Sheila Adams, Larry Rich, Real Fournier, Anita Skinner, and Jonathon Earl Bowser
Mark Totan was born November 11th, 1951 and originally from the small, Eastern Arctic community of Igloolik, Nunavut. Mark is a self taught artist who has been carving in a variety of stone and antler mediums since 1990. Each carving is original and depicts some feature of the lifestyle or history of his people.
Totan begins the carving process by roughing out a block of stone with a hammer, chisel and hand axe; he then uses files, rasps and sandpaper for finishing. The final touch consists of heating and rubbing the carving with wax or oil to accent the natural grain of the stone. His carvings are displayed and sold in various galleries throughout Canada and the American mid-west. In addition, his works form a part of numerous private and corporate collections throughout the world.
